This was the second year of running a fancy dress theme on the Boxing Day dive. Around 15 divers turned up from the Barry and Cardiff clubs, many also accompanied by family and supporters.

There was varying levels of “fancy dress” ranging from the inevitable Santa hat to full blown costumes bought to fit over dive kit. The only brief being; it had to be safe and unrestrictive if being worn in the water.

Plenty of photos were taken of the participants who can be viewed in the gallery.

The diving in Cosmeston Lake is probably best described as unremarkable. It has poor visibility most of the time, with a flat lifeless silty bottom reaching around 9 metres in places.

Because of its regular use by novices for training it seems to have become a tradition to introduce points of interest. The only original underwater attractions; a couple of old cars, have consequently been “enhanced”.

The most complete car, a Ford Cortina seems to have become home for an increasing number of garden gnomes, one of which must be in I.T. judging by the laptop computer sat on the bonnet.

Not wishing to waste an opportunity to add to the attractions, Bill was seen making his way to the Cortina with a large holdall slung beneath a lifting bag, the contents of which were remaining secret.

A number of divers followed Bill to his destination but, were unable to see what was unloaded from the bag due to the enormous cloud of silt kicked up during the activity.

A number of divers will be back in Cosmeston on New Years Day, I’m sure someone will give a report on the new attraction.

Well done to everyone who participated, it was a good fun day and a great end to a year of brilliant diving.

A number of divers made the trip across the lake on new years day. The water was a barmy 6.5 degrees C and visibility up to around 2 metres in places.

There was a little curiosity about what was left on the roof of the Cortina last week, I can reveal that the Gnome garden has grown since my last visit, with the addition of a large white ornament in the middle.
