Hi All, The Welsh Association of Sub-Aqua Clubs wish to hold a meeting in the Cardiff area on a Sunday morning around the 18th or 25th of January. They're looking for a venue, for around 20 - 25 delegates from 10am for a couple of hours. Anyone know of a possible room available? Refreshments might be a bonus but not essential. Any costs will be reimbursed by WASAC. Please let me know if you can think of somewhere. Anyhow I thought I’d publish his, even if a week late!!<o:p></o:p></pre> Weymuff Weekend<o:p></o:p> 8/9th November 2008<o:p></o:p> Trip Report<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p>You don’t really need to be a Hercules Parrot or Inspector Morse to notice the entire Dorset Trawler fleet chained (not tied) to the quay wall in <st1:city w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Weymouth</st1:place></st1:city>. Every seagull on the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">South</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">Coast</st1:placetype></st1:place> sitting miserably on the fish market roof, and the wheelie bins being blown down the roads like tumble weed.<o:p></o:p> It’s a bit fresh! Stated the skipper matter of factly as some tried to relocate their breakfasts (into the harbour)<o:p></o:p> Well we did try to get out to sea, but the waves were actually breaking over the wheelhouse roof and making life very damp for those poor souls who cannot abide warm cosy conditions inside.<o:p></o:p> <pre>The Harbour it was, and the usual junk was on display, with many taking advantage of special offers. Find one get four stuck together. Silty was the word of the day and I swear somebody was dragging a plough and a chain behind them. I felt like Saddam Hussein with a million Americans driving across the dessert towards him, and he turns to his batman and says. Where’s all this #@*#ing dust coming from. The usual drinking problems were evident with some determined, not to come home until every pub was dry. Then wake everyone up by rattling door handles. It was a brilliant weekend, thanks Anne, thanks Margaret, thanks Social Services of <st1:city w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Weymouth</st1:place></st1:city>, for not locking up our care in the community persons<o:p></o:p></pre> <pre><o:p> </o:p>><(((º>·´¯'·.¸,. ><(((º>'·.¸¸.·´¯'·..·´¯'·..¸><(((º><o:p></o:p></pre> <pre>Cosmeston saw the normal smattering of hardy divers on Sunday, including Kiwi Steve, who on the basis that he’s not yet made it anywhere else still thinks Cossie is ok!! I would say however that he is one of our more hardy divers, after we realized that it wasn’t neoprene gloves he was wearing, but knitted ones – “thought it was a little cold” he agreed after his half hour dip with Mark.<o:p></o:p></pre> <pre><o:p></o:p>Mr Turnbull on the other hand may have something for Kaz, although on the basis that fin..ders keepers, he may just hold onto it – the strap’s worth something if nothing else! <o:p> </o:p>><(((º>·´¯'·.¸,. ><(((º>'·.¸¸.·´¯'·..·´¯'·..¸><(((º> </pre> <pre><o:p> </o:p>Brian and Tony were working hard this weekend on their IFC Course –well done to them for taking part – here’s Brian’s report<o:p></o:p></pre> Instructor Foundation Course  -  <st1:city w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Swansea</st1:place></st1:city><o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> IFC course was to be held over the weekend at Olchfa school, in Sketty.  <o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p>After a quick meet and greet , Tony, I and the other twenty-two students were briefed on the aims of the course.  The students and instructors were rather subdued and serious-looking. Fortunately this was more a result of the previous night’s <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Wales</st1:place></st1:country-region> game and early starts, not nerves! <o:p></o:p> The instructors (all at least “Advanced-level plus”) put on examples of theory presentations before we were splitting us into groups for the practical demonstrations.   Towards the end of the first afternoon we were presented with a choice of topics, from which we had to select our practical and theory presentations for the next day.  Earlier group sessions had given us the structures, as well as plenty of ideas, suggestions for use in our “homework”.<o:p></o:p> Unlike most of the students on the course, Tony and I had booked a (twin!) room in a local hotel for night. It did save a few hours travelling but have you ever tried tracing drawings onto OHP slides while listening to a seemingly drunken crowd in the hotel popping balloons and cheering? We had our revenge that evening though!   Dinner was to be a curry and a drink with the instructors, and a couple of other students: Ceri Anne from Barry, and one-legged Mike from <st1:city w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Newcastle</st1:place></st1:city> Emlyn (a bit slow on land, but like a fish underwater!).   <o:p></o:p> Eventually we headed back to our room, where I finished off my tracing while Tony ran through his powerpoint presentation on his laptop before going to bed.   The early start and a busy day had taken its toll!  (Where and when was the revenge? Room 38, midnight onwards:  two divers: post- beer, post- curry, and a long, hard day!)<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p>The next morning started sharply while I completed my presentation notes, and Tony “adjusted” his powerpoint slides.  <o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p>The student groups remained separated for the morning to do their practical and theory presentations.  There were plenty of styles and methods used, but there was more than enough support and humour to make up for the nerves!  The course ended with everyone coming together for the final course lectures and exercises. <o:p></o:p>  It was a long weekend but, at its end, out of the twenty-four students all of us were qualified as Assistant Diving Instructors!!!<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p>Despite some nerves to start with, we were quickly put at ease by the humour and support of the course instructors and other students. Famous divers, such as Monty Halls, will be speaking about their work and there will be films showing throughout the weekend. It’s an event for all the family with MCS beachcombing walks, volley ball and other beach games. There will be an underwater treasure hunt with some great prizes, as well as a photo competition and a buddy auction, with a chance to bid on a dive with several scuba celebs. Diving manufacturers will also be on hand to show their latest products and in some cases give you a chance to dive with their new kit. A U-Boat sank her in 1918<o:p></o:p></pre> <pre>captained by Ober-Leutnant Lohs. She now lies on her port side in 49<o:p></o:p></pre> <pre>metres with her high side at 35 metres. This makes her a very exciting<o:p></o:p></pre> <pre>and enjoyable dive with generally excellent visibility. She carried<o:p></o:p></pre> <pre>eight 6 inch guns and when built fitted with over 1000 portholes. This<o:p></o:p></pre> <pre>wreck is an underwater marine park with large shoals of various fish,<o:p></o:p></pre> <pre>many Ling, Congar and the usual vast amounts of Crustacean.<o:p></o:p></pre> <pre>The <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Mexico</st1:place></st1:country-region><o:p></o:p></pre> <pre>The <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Mexico</st1:place></st1:country-region> was a cargo liner and lies in a maximum depth of 48 metres.<o:p></o:p></pre> <pre>She is upright and large hull sections are raised 10 metres from the<o:p></o:p></pre> <pre>seabed. The wreck has an enormous amount of fish on it. One dive on it<o:p></o:p></pre> <pre>this year, we had 15 metres visibility and full daylight penetration.<o:p></o:p></pre> <pre>During the descent the wreck looked like it was moving with the amount<o:p></o:p></pre> <pre>of fish swimming over the site.<o:p></o:p></pre> <pre>The Duke<o:p></o:p></pre> <pre>This is a cargo vessel that sunk in 1898 whilst carrying glass and<o:p></o:p></pre> <pre>chinaware from <st1:city w:st="on">Holland</st1:city> to <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">India</st1:place></st1:country-region>. This is a very interesting wreck to<o:p></o:p></pre> <pre>dive with lots of different types of glass cargo to see. The load<o:p></o:p></pre> <pre>includes small china glass candleholders, tumblers, jars, teapots,<o:p></o:p></pre> <pre>dishes, plates and oil lamps.<o:p></o:p></pre> <pre>The British Commerce<o:p></o:p></pre> <pre>A General cargo vessel sunk prior to the First World War, which is<o:p></o:p></pre> <pre>laden with many various artefacts. She is very open and like all the<o:p></o:p></pre> <pre>wrecks in this area has abundant sea life with excellent visibility<o:p></o:p></pre> <pre><o:p> </o:p>These are just some of the sites that could be dived, others include<o:p></o:p></pre> <pre>The Donegal, Zanstrum, Basil, UB153 and other Submarines (Including a<o:p></o:p></pre> <pre>new U boat found this year) and many more. These wrecks are a long way<o:p></o:p></pre> <pre>off shore and visibility is usually very good. A brief attempt on Saturday to make it to a dive site other than <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Portland</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">Harbour</st1:placetype></st1:place> was aborted at the halfway mark and we turned round toward the shelter of<o:p></o:p> <pre>the harbour walls and the 'bottle bank'. This wasn't a huge disaster though when we found around 5m visibility in the area (when everyone else's silt wasn't drifting past you!). To prove it was a worthwhile dive and determined to get the most out of our nitrox Mark and I wandered around for over an hour looking at the various bottles, plates, dogfish and John Dory to be found before heading back to the boat for hot soup. The afternoon dive found us on the Countess of Erne, one of the wrecks along the inside of the wall.<o:p></o:p></pre> <pre>This is one of those sites that is only ever dived in bad weather when everything else is blown out and consequently is rarely seen (literally) or only in very bad vis. Making sure we were the first in, we found several metres of visibility again and spent the first half of the dive slowly exploring the open interior of the wreck before visibility was lost (no – we were not responsible for that!). A large flatfish, probably a Brill, was also found lazily draped over a piece of wreckage Eventually after it had been partially melted by the beam directed onto it it swam off. The wreck lies only a metre or two away from the large blocks of the harbour wall which can also be explored for the life living among them.Saturday evening saw the usual trip to Wetherspoons for food, fantastically washed down by the large array of real ales available for the Wetherspoons beer festival. The die-hards carried on afterwards, staggering back around 3am and announcing their presence by opening every bedroom door before eventually finding the bathroom.<o:p></o:p></pre> <pre>Sunday dawned even windier but we still made it out to, you guessed it, the bottle bank. Getting our money's worth once more, Mark and I spent another hour on the bottom, finding a spare anchor for the RIB and several scallops to be sent up on a lifting bag and a cuttlefish (which wasn't). Following this dive, the decision was made (not by me) to call it a day and go home early (disgraceful).<o:p></o:p></pre> <pre><o:p> </o:p></pre> Winter Warmer 31st January/1st February – Skin Deep<o:p></o:p> <o:p></o:p>Anyone interested?
