Bill sent me his take on the New Years diving – pretty much sums it up!
Cold or not, we braved bitter winds to go back and try it all again on Sunday – I’ve nearly thawed out!!
Mark turned up to be able to answer “Yesterday” to the “When did you last dive” question, having had a windfall holiday turn up! I’m sure pictures will follow!
Cardiff BSAC First Dive in 2018
“What a lovely day for it” Muttered someone through the sleet.
It was that time of the year again where divers had “to prove” they were real divers by wallowing in 5’C slime. (Formerly Cosmeston International Diving
Centre) for the statuary 15 minutes.
A total of 6 elderly and infirm, diving stalwarts, Anne, Steve, Dave D, Ross, Bob and Bill with a newcomer Matt (who should have known better) completed
the first diving of 2018.
Bill knew it wasn’t going to go well, as he had lost a sock on the way from the car to the changing rooms, and the suit had shrunk at least two sizes
since he last used it.
Bob was showing off in his new made to measure suit. (We’re still trying to fathom out who it was made for)
The 6m tall weed growing off the rocky areas has died and collapsed onto the bottom, so any sort of landmarks to aid navigation have gone, and blundering
around is now the norm, well I know it shouldn’t be, but I’ve always sort of blundered around recognising stuff only occasionally, but it definitely has got worse.
Visibility was 1-2m generally, occasionally more in the shallows, but after “Weed-dragger” Davies, Bob “The Plough” Norton, Ross “Combine Harvester”
Wilson, and lastly the Groupers, had been in, Bill and Matt’s visibility was decidedly lower.
Water temperature is 6’C
Bill saw a single Dace so it was all worthwhile.
All this fun and jollity, is for a brilliant value for money £3.00.
Fantastic experience for all divers, and after 15 minutes of being in 6’C you commonly use swear words you only normally use in extremes.
Thanks Anne for organising it. Well done everyone.
Cosmeston booked for Sunday as usual!
course – weekend of 3rd March 2018
Mark is going to run a boat handling course this year, this is
a practical boat-based course that gives each student plenty of time at the helm of a dive boat to practise their skills, including how to drop and recover divers
This is a course, so doesn’t have an exam at the end. Once you have taken this course, you will be able to drive the club rib (under supervision of a Cox’n) and is the stepping
stone in taking your Diver Cox’n qualification.
The course cost is £44 for the pack, plus associated costs (eg launch fees, fuel etc).
This will be limited in numbers, but if we don’t have sufficient takers in club it will be opened up to other BSAC clubs. Mark can only practically teach 8 due to the requirements
for the actual boat handling, so if you want to be included please let Mark (or me in Mark’s absence) know as soon as possible. Mark is now away for a week, so I’m sure he will provide more information on his return. Looking at the Regional Boat Handling course,
they are charging £150, so we will be substantially cheaper – so come on board!!
Martyn Farr Lecture – 29th March 2018
Club have organised a lecture by Martyn Farr. Tickets will be on sale, probably this week, and it is first come first served. As a club member you are getting the opportunity
to purchase these now – but don’t dawdle as once they are on general release, I cant guarantee tickets for you. It’s open to all, so please spread the word. If you want tickets, please speak to Bill
If you are on Facebook, and aren’t yet friends of Cardiff BSAC, please do sign up for that,
you may get to hear of dives/events as the details are released!
If you don’t use Facebook, consider signing up – even if you only use it for club information!
Don’t forget we have tide tables for 12 months + on our website – great tool for planning your UK diving! Thanks to Mark for
